Online enrollment -- using internet-based PECOS

Introduction

The internet-based PECOS facilitates the Medicare provider enrollment process by furnishing health care providers and suppliers with an easier, faster, and more efficient alternative to paper-based enrollment in the Medicare program.
However, internet-based PECOS not only simplifies the enrollment process for applicants, it also significantly expedites the enrollment process by verifying provider information online and electronically transmitting the enrollment data directly to the Medicare contractor responsible for processing it.
Note: If you have previously created an internet-based PECOS record and wish to view the specialty type listed in your enrollment record, please click here external pdf file to learn how.
Already familiar with internet-based PECOS? Enroll now external link

Complete your enrollment in four simple steps:

1. System registration requirements

To take advantage of internet-based PECOS, applicants must first create an account in the Identity & Access System (I&A) external link. The I&A System allows you to register for Medicare or update your current enrollment information, register to receive EHR incentive payments for eligible professionals and hospitals that adopt, implement and upgrade or demonstrate meaningful use with certified EHR technology, and apply for and manage NPIs.
Need help with an existing account? Contact the External User Services (EUS) help desk external link

2. Required information for online enrollment – view checklists

Before you login to internet-based PECOS, it is important to have the information you need to complete the online enrollment process. However, the information required varies based upon whether the user is an individual physician or non-physician practitioner or a member of a provider/supplier organization.
Required information checklists
Take advantage of these helpful checklists to ensure that you have the information you need to successfully complete your enrollment through PECOS:

3. Enroll in internet-based PECOS

Once you have obtained a web account with NPPES, have an active NPI, and gathered all of the information listed on the related checklist, you are ready to enroll. Enroll now with internet-based PECOS external link
Note: If you should require assistance during the internet-based PECOS enrollment process, please refer to CMS’ Provider enrollment assistance guide external pdf file, which outlines which phone calls should go to EUS and which calls should go to your MAC.

Electronic signatures and support documentation

Once you have entered all required information, you must select a signature method for the authorized official (AO) and the provider. If you select the electronic signature (i.e., e-signature) method, you will be asked to include the email address for the AO and to indicate your acceptance of the Certification Statement Terms and Conditions as well as the Authorization Statement Terms and Conditions. Your AO will receive an internet-based PECOS email describing the procedure to finalize the e-signature process. For more information, please review CMS’ Electronic Signature How-to Guide external pdf file.
Once you have successfully completed the e-signature process and have digitally uploaded all required support documentation, you do not have to sign and mail a printed copy of the application, certification statement, or support documentation.

4. Checking application status

Providers and suppliers may use the PECOS Self-Service Application external link to view the status of an internet-based PECOS enrollment application. Located on the internet-based PECOS website, this valuable resource allows users to enter required information (based on provider type) to formulate a query to search internet-based PECOS:
Individual practitioner external link -- required information includes: First and last names, TIN/TIN type, enrollment state/territory, and NPI.
Organization external link -- required information includes: Legal business name, TIN/TIN type, and enrollment state/territory.
Note: Wild card searches (e.g., “CH*”) are not supported by the internet-based PECOS self-service application.

Available provider enrollment actions

After logging on to internet-based PECOS, providers/suppliers may utilize the system to perform the following:
Initial enrollment in the Medicare program
Change existing Medicare enrollment record information
Add, change, or terminate reassignment of Medicare benefits
Reactivation of existing Medicare enrollment records
Voluntary termination of existing Medicare enrollment record
View processing status of online enrollment application

Additional internet-based PECOS Resources

Registered internet-based PECOS users may use the system for initial enrollment as well as to change, reactivate, or voluntarily terminate an existing enrollment record. Users may also add, change, or terminate reassignment of Medicare benefits. Here you will find additional links to tips, tutorials, news and more.
