March is National Nutrition Month

As we age, healthy eating habits are more important than ever. Having a balanced nutritional diet can help older adults manage chronic conditions and lower their risk of heart attack and stroke.
Recommend Medicare preventive services
Medicare covers eight preventive services for nutrition-related health conditions like diabetes, chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and obesity:
1. Medical nutrition therapy external link: nutrition and lifestyle assessment, for patient diagnosed with diabetes, renal disease or who have had a kidney transplant; individual or group nutritional therapy services, help managing lifestyle factors, and follow-up visits to help certain patients manage their diet
2. Annual wellness visit external link: health risk assessment and personalized prevention plan external link to keep patients healthy
3. Cardiovascular disease screening tests external link: blood tests for cholesterol, lipid, and triglyceride levels to help detect conditions that may lead to a heart attack or stroke
4. Diabetes screening external link: blood glucose laboratory test screenings for patients at risk for developing diabetes
5. Diabetes self-management training external link: tips to help patients manage their diabetes, including eating healthy and being active, monitoring blood glucose, taking prescription drugs, and reducing risks
6. Intensive behavioral therapy (IBT) for cardiovascular disease external link: blood pressure check, tips on eating well, and aspirin use to lower risk for cardiovascular disease
7. IBT for obesity external link: initial screening for body mass index and behavioral therapy sessions, including dietary assessment and counseling to help patients lose weight by focusing on diet and exercise
8. Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program external pdf file: specially trained coaches teach long-term behavior changes for diet and exercise and weight control strategies for eligible patients
