    MBI Lookup Tool

    CMS identified a concerning trend of malicious actors stealing MBIs and using them to commit Medicare fraud. Some are misusing Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) MBI lookup tools. We’re implementing enhanced monitoring controls to prevent this abuse. 

    What You Need to Know 

    Only use the MAC MBI lookup tool for people you intend to provide a service or product to that you’ll bill to Medicare. Our enhanced monitoring compares the MBIs you look up against actual claims submitted with NPIs. If we notice an unusually high rate of MBI lookups without associated claims, your access to the lookup tool may be removed. Make sure your MAC portal users are associated with NPIs in your organization on whose behalf they may perform MBI lookups. This helps us verify legitimate use and protects your access to the lookup tool.

    • A new error may be received in September if you use a bookmark or favorites link to access SPOT. Updates were recently made to the single sign-on process that is used to access SPOT. These updates do not impact the login process or primary link to access the portal. However, changes are needed to any bookmarks or favorites that were previously saved to https://thespot.fcso.com.

    Tips

    • Remember to log in to SPOT frequently (preferably weekly). All users are required to log in at least once every 30 days. Any user IDs that do not meet this requirement will be considered inactive. Logging in to the Identity Management (IDM) system to reset your password is required to reactivate the SPOT access.
    • SPOT account users are approved by their organization’s designated approver. If you are having issues being approved for a user account, please contact your approver directly.
    • For specific questions related to transactions within your account, please use the feedback form within SPOT.
    • For the best user experience, users are encouraged to access SPOT through Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
