Providers employed by government health care programs FAQ
Q: Does a physician or non-physician practitioner employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA), Department of Defense (DOD) TRICARE program, or the Public Health Service (PHS) need to enroll in Medicare if he or she only intends to order/refer beneficiary services?
A: Yes -- a physician or non-physician practitioner who is employed by the DVA, DOD TRICARE, or PHS must be of a specialty type eligible to refer and have a current enrollment record in the Provider Enrollment, Chain and Ownership System (PECOS). The latter may be accomplished in one of two ways:
• Complete the enrollment topics in internet-based PECOS for the sole purpose of ordering/referring items or services for Medicare beneficiaries
• Complete the paper enrollment application CMS-855O
Note: The completed CMS-855O should be mailed to First Coast. Once the information sent in with the application has been verified and the application has been approved, First Coast will enter the information in to internet-based PECOS, and the physician or non-physician practitioner will be included in the ordering/referring file in the Medicare claims system
