MBI lookup coming soon to SPOT

Soon, users of the Secure Provider Online Tool (SPOT) will be able to look up the new Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) belonging to all Medicare beneficiaries.
MBIs are replacing the Social Security number-based Health Insurance Claims Numbers (HICNs) on beneficiaries’ Medicare cards, which began to be mailed out in April.
With the new MBI lookup functionality coming to SPOT on June 4, providers will be able to enter information on a beneficiary and receive that beneficiary’s new MBI.
The transition from HICNs to MBIs is in response to the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015 and in preparation for the new Medicare cards being distributed to beneficiaries starting in June who live in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
SPOT users are now able to use either a HICN or an MBI to exchange and retrieve data throughout the portal when they see the term “Medicare ID.”
