“Ophthalmology services and cataract surgery coverage requirements” (Part B)

Medicare Part B provides coverage for treatment by an ophthalmologist for certain medical conditions, including wet age-related macular degeneration (wet AMD), cataracts, and glaucoma. In the CMS 2021 Medicare fee-for-service supplemental improper payment data, cataract removal and lens insertion accounted for over $218 million in projected improper payments with an error rate of 12.7%. Cataract surgery claims are under medical review by multiple review contractors. Learn the coverage, medical necessity, and documentation requirements to avoid claim denials.
