The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) of 2015, requires the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to remove Social Security numbers (SSNs) from all Medicare cards by April 2019. A new Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) will replace the SSN-based Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) on the new Medicare cards for Medicare transactions like billing, eligibility status, and claim status.

Resources to offer beneficiaries external link - Allows beneficiaries to get notified when their card is in the mail and check the status of mailings
For beneficiaries who did not receive their card after mailings in their area is complete:
Print and give them the “Still Waiting for Your New Card?” handout (in English external pdf file or Spanish external pdf file).
Or tell them to call 1-800-Medicare (1-800-633-4227). There might be something that needs to be corrected, such as updating their mailing address.
