Summary

Medicare will only pay for items or services that have been billed with the national provider identifier (NPI) of the physician or eligible professional who has enrolled in Medicare and has ordered the items or services provided.
Providers should ensure that any items or services submitted on Medicare claims are referred or ordered by Medicare-enrolled providers of a specialty type authorized to order or refer services.
